Challenge/customer problem

• Construction of the arena was technically demanding, logistically tight and subject to clear coastal and nature conservation requirements
• Creation of a working platform from the foot of the dunes to the water’s edge (3-metre difference in height)
• Protection of the beach in the vicinity of the arena; prevention of sand erosion

Solution / Customer benefits

• Protection of the water’s edge against seawater using Beams and panels from the E+S linear shoring system
• The beams and panels were delivered up to three weeks before the start of the event; during transport along the beach to their respective installation points, a wheel loader transported the elements, and an excavator drove the beams into the ground
• The beams had a length of around 3.50 metres and were embedded approximately 1.50 metres deep into the ground; the panels were 2.32 metres high and 3 metres wide
• The shoring, which as a structure ultimately serves the same function as a simple sheet pile wall, was not used in this case to transfer the stadium’s load, but solely for protection of the deposited sand from the waves
• The temporary shoring, developed from practical experience in coastal and infrastructure engineering, proved to be a safe and rapid solution; its use offered significant advantages over other methods: it could be installed relatively quickly and without difficulty, and, in combination with a geotextile, the system met the pre-conditions for the enormous sand movements and for safety during the events
