Flexible corner rail shoring secured the new construction of the shaft structures
The district town of Nördlingen as well as the districts of Holheim and Nähermemmingen, which belong to Nördlingen, obtain their drinking water from the Ederheim spring area, which is located about 6 kilometers from the town area. At the end of 2014, the last section of the pipeline, which was put into operation in 1896 and is now operated by the Nördlingen municipal utility, was renewed:The punctures through "Riegelberg" and "Kampf" made the rehabilitation of around 1550 meters of pipeline in the last construction section particularly tricky. Both the laying of the pipeline in the tunnel and its dismantling posed a particular challenge for the company commissioned with the work, Carl Heuchel GmbH & Co. KG - as did the rehabilitation of the masonry shafts from which the galleries had been excavated.
The old shafts were uncovered and demolished, and in the course of laying the new pipeline the original structures were replaced by new shaft structures made of precast reinforced concrete. To secure the excavation pits required for this, the company relied on corner rail shoring of the EMMUNDS+Staudinger product brand from terra infrastructure.
Simple and flexible to use
Corner rail shoring is a special shoring solution that is suitable, among other things, for work on shaft structures. As a rule, the system consists of four slide rail panels and four corner rail supports. Special bracing systems are not required. All forces are absorbed by the shoring panels. As stable as the system is, it is also easy and flexible to use: By using different panel lengths in pairs, right-angled excavations of widely differing sizes can be realized - the system is equally powerful, cost-effective and economical. With the appropriate girders, corner rail shoring can be designed either as single-rail or as stepped shoring; in the case of the project in Nördlingen, the stepped variant was used. As several bays were installed, the U-type roller unit was also used on site.
After a construction period of three months, the project was completed on schedule and the new pipeline was put into operation. Pressure tests and water sampling were successful. The supply of natural Ederheim spring water to Nördlingen, Holheim and Nähermemmingen is now permanently ensured again.
